I was fortunate to grow up in Australia where swimming was a big part of my life. I decided to start teaching others because of a belief that everyone has a right to know how to swim. It could save your life or it could help you to save someone else's. I also realised that many swimmers were just not realising their potential. For some people it's an endless slog up and down the pool; others struggle to overcome anxieties about breathing or putting their face in the water. Some swimmers plateau and lose motivation.
I discovered Swim Smooth after a friend recommended I look at an animation of a swimmer as a way to improve my own technique. That was Mr Smooth and I was hooked immediately on the philosophy behind Paul Newsome and Adam Young's Swim Smooth – that we all have the ability to become better, more efficient swimmers regardless of size, background and ambitions.
I went out to train with Swim Smooth in Perth in 2015 and in 2017 became a certified Swim Smooth Coach. It has taken two years of hard work learning how to become an expert in video analysis, how to identify the different swim types and work with each of those to help them achieve their personal goals. It has been a life changing experience for which I am so grateful.
My clients are realising their goals – whether it's a PB, a place in the GB Age Group or finally feeling comfortable putting their face in the water and conquering frontcrawl after years of breaststroke! A highlight for me last year was competing in the European Masters Championships in London. This year I will be out on the triathlon circuit a bit more.
Knowing how to get the most out of your swimming will pay dividends whether it's for competition or leisure. There are endless opportunities out there for the taking!
Enjoy the journey! I am enjoying mine!
